1989 Score #655 - Jose Canseco (1988 Highlight)

Jose Canseco had a bunch of 40-40 cards come out in 1989 but this one always stood out to me. The front of the card was pretty cool but what got me was the pic on the back. Is that the sloppiest looking slide into second you've ever seen or what 😂  Steroids or not, I tip my hat. People got their money's worth whenever they got to see him play and he'll always be my childhood fav.

The Can Stash!

I was sitting back ,enjoying this polar vortex the planet Is currently experiencing and It got me thinking....."Towards the latter part of his career ,Jose Canseco's  bat   was just as cold!"But I'll spare you the misery of seeing J.C. In a White Sox uni (for now) and post the second half of my "Canseco as a Ranger" post. He wasn't horrible with Texas except for 93 where he only played half of a season.

Speaking of polar vortexes.

It wasn't until I scanned these that I noticed the stain on the back of the Hostess card. Was this common?I'm thinking It was a result of  whatever cake It was wrapped up with secreting sugary deliciousness all over the card.Who knows?

The Can Stash!

It's been a while since I've posted about baseball cards here at the pub and not owning a scanner had a lot to do with that. Taking pictures of baseball cards with a Finepix camera  is a huge pain In the ass, largely because of lighting.Messing around with the flash function and finding the right light to snap pics of cards without getting any weird glare or  odd shadows was becoming too tedious. I've finally picked up a scanner so expect more baseball card posts and an uptick In content. This week I'll be posting the rest of my small Canseco collection as well as any new cards as I acquire them.

The Can Stash! (The Pepsi Conspiracy)

I saw these over on Fuji's site  a while back and had to pick up a set for my self.I love the pic variety and the vibrant blue and whites, but something  about these cards bring out the Alex Jones In me.Could  Pepsi have had something to do with Canseco being traded to Texas?Did they see It coming? What's with the red and blue duds?I mean,ok,Pepsi colors, but wouldn't a Mountain Dew motif been a little more apropos? In the 90's Pepsi's slogan was "Pepsi,a generation ahead".This set Is from 1990 and Canseco wouldn't be traded to Texas until mid season of  1992.Also,Pepsi had strong ties to Texas In the 90's.So much so Texas brass considered changing the teams name to the Texas Pepsi's.Although that last nugget of info has yet to be fact checked.

The Can Stash (Mother's Cookies Edition)

As a kid ,my local card shop dealer knew me by name. The Hot Stove League was a quaint little card shop ,20 minutes walking distance from where I lived at the time, ran by the sweetest little elderly couple. The owner, slightly balding with a white handle bar mustache ,always had a stack of Canseco cards ready for me to sort through. Most were oddballs that I would  pass up In favor of the encased, more mainstream Canseco cards. The oddballs consisted mostly of All Star inserts, sticker cards and Mother's Cookies.I remember me and my friends chuckling at the name brand "Mother's Cookies" ,lol! WTF?Of all  the generic looking  oddball cards of our favorite players,Mother's Cookies was always the laughing stock. They were the butt of all jokes, the cards in our spokes and frankly, the name  "Mother's Cookies" was just a l-i-t-t-l-e  creepy.Very Norman Bates-esque.Well, It's taken me nearly 30 years to realize how attractive these cards really are.Maybe It's the "no frills" adult In me that can appreciate the simplicity, now, much more than I could have as a kid.

You can't tell from the pictures but these are glossy cards. In fact ,they don't even feel like cards at all. They are more like personal pictures someone took and had developed.Something you'd find In a photo album. The more I gaze at them, the more I like them.Let's face It ,today's cards   bamboozle and perplex us  with the amount of flash and flamboyancy put Into them. With this product, you get a more personal look at your favorite baseball player. The pictures really make It seem as If you were down on the field with the players during the photo shoot. The player names and teams are discreetly placed at the corners ,letting the pictures do all the talking.

1987 Mother's Cookies

This Is my first card of  Jose and Reggie .Strangely, this may be the only card featuring the both of them together.I could be wrong, though.
You would think more of them existed.

1988 Mother's Cookies

1989 Mother's Cookies

1990 Mother's Cookies

1991 Mother's Cookies

The backs are very plain Jane with a designated space for the players autograph.

The following four Mother's Cookies cards were part of a 1989 set .

Bizarro World Canseco's

In my last post,I sent the message out to the blogosphere that I was In need of  some Canseco White Sox/Angels/Expos  cards .I got antsy and kept seeing them on ebay so I picked up a couple singles. These truly are the most bizarre Canseco cards I own.I'm not even sure If  Canseco got any AB's In  for the Expos or Angels. These are like ,from some alternate universe or something.I tend to forget that Canseco got kind of sucky towards the end of his career and In the process of sucking something fierce ,got moved around a bit. It's a shame, too, cuz all he needed was few homers more to reach 500.I gotta believe even that wouldn't have gotten him into the hall with all the animosity .I just love the cards though. They  remind me of  all those mid 80's Reggie Jackson cards .

The Kaz Delivers!

A short while back,I posted about a player that I was going to start collecting,Nick Markakis. Mark Kaz from This Way to the Clubhouse decided to help out by sending me a few Markakis cards and a couple of Cansecos to boot! So,a big thank you to Mark for that random act of kindness. It's not everyday that someone just offers up cards like that  ,so I truly am grateful. Now,on to the cards....

Here's a nice Markakis  Fleer  Rookie Sensations.Kenji Johjima came out In this set ,too, so I  believe these came out In 2006 .

Laying out to make the grab!

I'm not a big A&G guy.I never picked any up at retail at the height of my card collecting back In 2006,and I still don't.I can, however, appreciate the distinguished design.

As much as I liked the Markakis cards, this one here Is my favorite of the bunch.
What an awesome Canseco card this Is!I really dig the credit card novelty.I never  knew these cards existed. His name  and stats are really embossed on the front of the card, juts like a real credit card.Good stuff!

At first I thought I already had this card, but upon further inspection,I didn't!BTW- I was looking at my Can Stash the other day and realized that I had no Canseco White Sox or Expos cards. Two teams he barely got to touch the turf with.So If anybody out there  has any of his White Sox cards or Expos card (I think he only had one) ,let me know ;)
