2007 Topps Updates/Highlights

Remember when Joba Chamberlain was the shizz? And Cameron Maybin was going to be the next Dave Winfield?Wasn't too long ago that the baseball world was high on these guys ,along with other emerging prospects like Alex Gordon,Carlos Gomez, etc. There was a time where the only place you could find a Topps Traded or a Donruss Rookies set was at your local hobby shop.Back in the day,If you wanted that true , pre-rookie card of your favorite star, you were going to have to hitch a ride to your nearest baseball card hobby shop to see If your dealer would brake up a set for you or buy It sealed.Today, while not the best place to  covet that  first year card of your favorite player (Bowman has that market cornered)) , you can find Topps Updated sets and even packs In places like Wal Mart and Target.  Years back,I  decided to take advantage of the uncustomary availability ,picking up  a  set of  2007 Topps Updates/Highlights on the strength  of the Maybin and Chamberlain "rookie" cards.

McFarlane Sportspicks - Sammy Sosa

I should have picked more of these up when I had the chance because they are truly little works of art!The likeness to Chicago's beloved slugger Is  uncanny! Not every McFarlane figure Is on point, player likeness-wise,but this one  certainly Is. Slammin' Sammy's HR hop Is captured nicely and things like personalized batting gloves and bat wear add to the overall realism of the figure.I'm more a collector of action figures these days, but It's tempting to put that on the back burner just to catch up on these marvelous looking toys that debuted sometime in the early 2000's. I've already got a Prince Fielder and Ichiro on my eBay watch list as well as a Reyes and David Wright,so you never know  ;)Enjoy the pics!

McFarlane Sportspicks NBA Series 2 (2002) - Shaquille O'neal

Back In 2001/2002 I was heavy into drugs..oops..sorry, freudian slip...into collecting McFarlane sports related statues. This was before the lid was blown open on steroid use In the MLB,so naturally I amassed a small collection of MLB stars that today have all been ousted as being heavy steroid/HGH users.I picked up Bonds,Sosa,McGwire and A-Rod figures thinking to myself that all of these guys were sure fire Hall of Famers and that their figures would undoubtedly skyrocket In value.I was wrong :( But that's the business side of buying up sports memorabilia.Your assumptions about a player or players career/memorabilia value will ultimately make you  look like a prophetic sports savant or just a flat out ass.Luckily no one has decided to rat out the NBA..YET,so my decision to pick up NBA figures as well ,may pay off in 20 years or so.I had originally planned to keep these guys carded but sheer boredom got the best of me. I've since broken open my  2002 McFarlane Shaq and would like to share my experience with you! YAY<sarcastically> !Lets take a look at the packaging from various angles.

Time to open this puppy up!

small catalog included with various figures available from the line
Light assembly required.

Here's Shaq In all his action figure glory! This Is a really nice piece and the likeness Is right on the money. McFarlane did a great job with this one!

Next will be taking a look at Sammy Sosa, stay tuned!

Raptors Game Memorabilia 2001

2001 Was Michael Jordan's second to last year In the NBA.While It was far from a rejuvenated Mike on the court ,occasional flashes of the old Jordan and his trademark fade-aways would occur sporadically. His comeback gave fans yet another chance to see the  graying legend do what he did best on the hardwood floors of basketball towns and cities everywhere! So when  he brought his show to Toronto,a couple of hours away from where I resided, going to the game  was a no-brainer.Not to mention the fact that Vince Carter, one of my favorite players at the time, would also be there and having both Jordan and Vince on the same floor was going to be monumental!I found It funny that the Raptors program featured  Michael Jordan  on the cover! It goes to show that even at that stage of his career,Jordan was still bigger than the game.I made sure to snag one up because they were going fast, and on the way out of the game I picked up this awesome Vince Carter bobble head!

On The Hunt For An 86 Donruss Canseco RC !

I know what your thinking.I could find it on Ebay for 10 bucks or less without having to go through packs only to come up short all the time.Well ,the reason why I'd rather find an 86 Donruss Canseco in a pack has everything to do with the amounts of counterfeit ones that pop up on Ebay. I recently picked up an 86 Fleer Prospects Canseco and something about It just doesn't seem right. It feels very thin, almost paper like. Not having one to compare it to ,I took the loss and moved on.I don't want the same to happen with the 86 Donruss as it is a card that I've been wanting since childhood and i'd be really bummed if they sent me a counterfeit.I don't trust  the wax packs as those are far from tamper proof and can easily be searched and then repacked. Not only that, but I managed to scoop up this rack pack for 99 cents and 2 bucks shipping,so I took the chance.Rack packs are cool because they are sealed in plastic packaging and even though I suppose they could also be tampered with,i hardly doubt anyone would take the time to do so and then sell the pack for 99 cents.Anyways,my pack was somewhat of a dud as it failed to relinquish the famed Canseco RR card.I did however come away with an awesome second year Puckett and Todd Worrell RR card. These cards are beautiful imo, especially the Rated Rookies.I'm in love with Donruss's 1986 and '87 product.Throw the new Panini 2014 design in there as well.Well, better luck next time I guess when I open up my second Rack Pack of  1986 Donruss baseball cards!
