I don't know about you but as a kid ,the sound of Baseball Tonight bumper music playing In the distance meant It was time for me to plant my butt in front of our living room television set to get filled In on whatever It was that took place In baseball that day.Of course ,without the internet and the never ending stream of instant sports news and media, there was always that void. That space between the morning edition of Sportscenter and Baseball Tonight .Both shows gave you ample information on the goings on In baseball that day ,but none of It was tangible. One had to rely solely on memory to run back last nights episode to anyone who may have missed It.
So what did an 80's kid living In an internet-less world do to get the 411 on his favorite team? I present to you ....the newspaper!
Prior to this copy ,I hadn't read the sports section of a newspaper In over 20 years!I've yet to pick up another paper ,since.Which begs the question.Do kids still read the sports section?Does anybody?I highly doubt It.
Ahem, as someone who produces a sports newspaper section, I can attest that people do actually read the newspaper. Kids, probably not. Teenagers and young adults, very unlikely (although the young adults should). But there are still those my age and older looking at it. And, good lord, parents of high school kids definitely read it.
ReplyDeleteI'm not gonna lie ,I miss It.But with so much news ,be It sports, world or local ,already at my fingertips,I'm afraid I may not even remember how to open one correctly.I fall into the "parent of a high school kid" category and should definitely start picking up the paper more often.
ReplyDeleteI usually read online, but when I'm at my Dad's he still gets the print New York Times, and I usually do look at the sports section. When I'm in Singapore I occasionally read the sports section of the local paper, but it's mostly soccer.
ReplyDeleteBTW, begging the question doesn't mean what you (and most people) think it means. A losing battle, I know...http://www.qwantz.com/index.php?comic=693
I appreciate the helpful info! And thanks for commenting ,Brett ;)
DeleteI used to read the San Jose Mercury News for years (from my childhood to the early 2000's), but eventually cancelled my subscription because I was cutting back on expenses. These days the only time I'll read the sports section is when I visit my dad in Vegas. He receives the Las Vegas Journal-Review every day, so I'll read the sports section while he does his sudoku.
ReplyDeleteHmmm Im noticing a "when I'm at my dad's " trend starting to develop here.Great, thanks for commenting,Fuji.
